3 years of racist shame! Stop the NT Intervention rally

 



STICS has organised a rally to mark the third anniversary of the

NT Intervention

on June 20th, 12 pm at Town Hall.

3 years of the Intervention has meant 3 years of assimilation of Aboriginal communities. This has meant 3 years of welfare quarantining, compulsory land leases and General Business Managers on Aboriginal communities.

The Intervention is continuing despite no evidence of welfare quarantining benefiting Aboriginal communities, as the recent Menzies health report demonstrated. Aboriginal communities are being forced into 20 ‘hubtowns' and out of homelands or remote communities. Despite a $680 million SIHIP programme only 6 or 7 new houses have been built for Aboriginal communities. More recently we have seen Aboriginal jobs cut and replaced with Macklin's new Communitiy Development and Employment Programmes (CDEP) meaning people like P. Inverway from Kalkaringi are working for the Basics Card - essentially working for rations.

Michael West (Welcome to country) - Metropolitan Lands Council

Tjanara Goreng Goreng - founder FIRDA Foundation for Indigenous Recovery and Development Australia. Former Senior Policy Advisor of community engagement and recovery at the Office of Indigenous Policy Coordination under Minister Mal Brough. Tjanara was responsible for providing advice on Indigenous child sexual abuse and violence and mental and emotional recovery to the Minister under the Howard Government. Because she questioned the policy decision to use the military and police to intervene in NT Aboriginal communities her house was raided and she was committed to stand trial for leakinginformation to Mutijulu city, blowing the whistle on the NT intervention.

Thursday, June 24th 6 for 6.30 pm: at Centre for Aboriginal Studies, Curtin University, Blg 211.

Richard Downs, Alyawarr spokesperson for the Ampilatwatja intervention walkoff will be speaking at a Public Forum about the Intervention and its effects at the grassroots community level. He will also be speaking about the Ampilatwatja walk off protest. This is one of Australia's most important human rights issue, fundamental to Australian history and until we get this right, the appropriate respect and community control by Aboriginal communities for their own affairs, land and culture, we do not have justice.
