Commendations by the Hon. Michael Kirby and Kate Grenville:

"I commend to those who have not seen it, 'This Is What We Said - Australian Aboriginal people give their views on the NT Intervention', because these are words that we should hear, that our Parliament should hear, that our leaders should hear."
The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG

Retired Judge of the High Court of Australia

"It's a beautiful book both as an object and in the thoughts it expresses. I hope it reaches many people..."
Kate Grenville

One of Australia's best known authors

"...I thought the most important part of the Will They be Heard? report are the transcripts at the back. There you can read people's own words. And that was one of the ideas behind putting out the second book that I launched in Alice Springs yesterday. That book, This Is What We Said - Aboriginal People Give Their Views on the Northern Territory Intervention just has the quotes from people at the FaHCSIA consultations. I like that approach because the whole paternalistic side of the Intervention that seems to assume that Aboriginal people just cannot make a go of it themselves is completely countered by how strong those voices are as they come through in the book...."

This book puts on record views about the NT Intervention that were expressed by Aboriginal people during the NTER consultations held between June and August 2009, which the government has claimed, falsely in the opinion of many, showed support for income management. The book is also being launched in Sydney and Adelaide on 13th February. I'll do a review of the book in the next week or so. In the meantime you can find the text of Former Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia, Professor Alastair Nicholson's speech at the Melbourne launch of "This Is What We Said" here....

Book Launch: "This Is What We Said"

Below you will find information of the launch of a book "This Is What We Said'. The book puts on record some views about the NT Intervention that were expressed by Aboriginal people during the NTER consultations between June and August last year. We feel that it is very important that these views are heard.. It is our belief that Government failed to listen to what was said by Aboriginal people and this is now evident by the legislation that is currently before Parliament.

We realise that not everybody was able to attend a launch and so we have attached an order form if you wish to purchase a book.

If you are able to assist in distributing information about the book we would be very grateful. It is a hard cover book and costs $15. We are still calling for donations to cover the cost of printing and there will be absolutely no profit from book sales. We will be providing free copies to the communities that participated.
